We are a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies employing about 94,000 people across the world.
We have operated in the UK since 1897. With over 6,500 employees, our operations here are an important part of our business.
Discover more about our history, our people, and the role we play in the UK today.
A leading UK business
Shell is a major energy producer and supplier. Together with our co-venturers, we provide around 11% of the UK’s total oil and gas production. We also make a vital contribution to the UK’s energy security by delivering energy into the UK from further afield. The natural gas we extract from Norway’s Ormen Lange field, for example, meets up to 20% of the UK’s total needs.
As well as delivering energy and providing products and services we make a significant contribution to the UK through employment, tax revenues and investment. In 2013 approximately £1 in every £10 of FTSE 100 dividends came from Shell.
Producing oil and gas
Shell produces oil and gas from more than 50 fields in the North Sea, operating more than 30 offshore installations, 30 subsea installations and two FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offtake vessels). We operate three onshore gas plants and a marine terminal that distributes natural gas liquids around the world.
Fuelling the nation
Shell has a major business in the UK distributing and retailing fuels, lubricants, bitumen and chemicals. Our network of petrol stations in the country serves more than four million customers every week and our aviation business fuels 600 flights every day. Shell makes a fuel delivery somewhere in the UK roughly every two minutes.
Securing the skills we need
The UK is one of the biggest sources of the skilled people that we need to help us meet the world’s growing energy demand. We employ 6,500 people in the UK, as well as about 2,000 British nationals who work for Shell overseas. Every year we recruit around 150 graduates.
